Clinical Labels and Biologics

Fall 2010

As we all have seen over the last 5 years, we are consistently seeing increased packaging and labeling work for "biologics."  Biologics are larger molecules, typically proteins, that major pharmaceutical and biotech companies are developing for vaccines and new gene therapies.  These new drugs are very expensive to formulate and, thus, have put great demands on our business to meet our customers' clinical supply chain needs.  These include pushing us to develop our cold storage supply chain (as they ordinarily need to be refrigerated or frozen) and meeting challenges in automated packaging through the use of robotics to improve our speed and accuracy.

There have been similar challenges and innovation in labeling the increased biologic studies we've seen at Clintrak.  The biggest sign of this has been an increase in what we call our "Wrap- around" (WAO) GlobalPly® booklet label.  We developed this type label back in 2006 that can be adhered to a small vial or syringe and wrap around itself multiple times to accommodate the permanent adherence to a small surface area yet display dozens of printed languages necessary for patient use and compliance.  Since we first introduced the production of our WAO booklet label this product line has grown to over 25% of our total booklet volume to date, in 2010.

The WAO label type has  also evolved over the years since we've added it to our other product offerings.  We have formulated different construction types to satisfy certain client needs that include dual patterned adhesives with permanent and removable adhesive and specific label stock materials that are more tear resistant.  These booklets are able to sustain immediate repositioning on vials and syringes if initial application was incorrect without tearing but well set with a strong permanent adhesive that will hold for years thereafter.  We also offer standard (single ply) labels that can wrap back around themselves for similar, single language usage.  Cryogenic standard labels for clinical use are also available at Clintrak.

Recommended Applications
Clintrak's GlobalPly® Plus with DRL Over Sandwich Booklet Label is recommended for applications in an international study requiring fixed text and variable printing. If the need for an additional label is necessary for the CRF or the CTM is too small for excess liner below the label, our "sandwich" construction is designed to fit on smaller CTMs providing a sound solution.
